Chilean Government Linux project at schools


Edulinux is an innitiative sponsored by Chilean Government and carried out by "Universidad de la Frontera" (aka UFRO). Edulinux has been installed on over 2200 school computers (mainly old pentium pcs from 1997 to 1999).

Umbria to promote Open Source in schools

The regional government of Umbria is investing 100.000 euro to promote the use of Open Source in local schools. The Italian region will soon train students, teachers and education management in the use of this type of software.

Andalusia to distribute open source laptops to schools


In the Spanish autonomous region of Andalusia, 190,500 students and teachers will start using open source laptops in January, Spanish newspapers reported earlier this month.

Education ministry supports GNU/Linux distribution for schools

With support from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (BMUKK), the third edition of a special version of a GNU/Linux distribution for schools has just been published.

Ministry of Education recommends Open Source

The Polish Ministry of National Education is advising schools and universities to use Open Source software. The recommendation comes at the end of a volunteer campaign to help schools switch to Open Source.

The Ministry recommended in a statement that schools and universities use OpenOffice. The application suite is sufficiently mature and advanced to be used for teaching and for office use in education and science institutes. "OpenOffice can successfully substitute proprietary applications and will result in significant savings on licenses."
